Abstract
The accurate design of integrated optical S bends, power splitters, an d directional couplers is described through a minimum number of normal ized parameters. General design curves showing these normalized parame ters for waveguides with a step refractive index profile and a quadrat ic core cross section are given. Thus a wide variety of integrated opt ical components may be designed accurately without the use of time-con suming numerical methods.
