The authors propose and demonstrate a novel mechanism for Q-switching
an Er-doped fibre laser at 1.5mum, based on strong mode frequency modu
lation of the intracavity pump laser diode under current modulation. T
he laser is effectively Q-switched when the diode mode frequency is sw
ept through the reflection window of a diffraction grating in the fibr
e laser cavity acting as a frequency-dependent reflector.
