Abstract
Forward error correction (FEC) has been used to improve the bit error rate performance of a 5Gbit/s 9000 km erbium-doped fibre amplifier (ED FA) transmission line. The results using a 5Gbit/s prototype optical t ransmission terminal showed extremely small penalty in BER performance after 9000km transmission.
