Abstract
In this article, current knowledge on the regulation of tight junction permeability is used as a platform for an analysis of the mechanisms of some common absorption enhancers. Epithelial barriers are considere d with an emphasis on the intestinal epithelium. The analysis reveal t hat different absorption enhancers may share some previously unrecogni sed characteristics but also display unique mechanisms of action.
