Ji. Oriordan et al., AMNESIC SYNDROME AFTER THEOPHYLLINE ASSOCIATED SEIZURES - IATROGENIC BRAIN INJURY, Journal of Neurology, Neurosurgery and Psychiatry, 57(5), 1994, pp. 643-645
Two patients developed a disabling amnesic syndrome after seizures ass
ociated with oral theophylline treatment. Such seizures are more likel
y in the elderly, in the presence of pre-existing neurological disease
, and when theophylline is given with certain antibiotics and cimetidi
ne. The mechanism of neuronal injury may be by the excessive release o
f endogenous excitotoxic glutamate.
