A 19-year-old man died of a disseminated herpesvirus infection. Micros
copic examination of a peritoneal fluid specimen revealed cellular cha
nges characteristic of a herpetic process, and an autopsy confirmed wi
despread herpes simplex virus type II infection. Viral infections may
be diagnosed by cytologic examination of body fluid specimens.
