A WIDE-FIELD MONITOR FOR INTEGRAL

It is proposed to supplement the main instruments on INTEGRAL with a w ide-field monitor in order to maximize the scientific return from the mission. The high degree of time variability exhibited by cosmic gamma -ray sources underlines the need for having a hard X-ray monitor as an integrated element of the scientific payload. Reliable predictions of the resource requirements and sensitivity of the proposed detector ca n be based on the experiences obtained with similar detectors operated on the GRANAT and EURECA satellites.
