Aj. Castrotirado et al., DISCOVERY AND OBSERVATIONS BY WATCH OF THE X-RAY TRANSIENT GRS 1915+105, The Astrophysical journal. Supplement series, 92(2), 1994, pp. 469-472
The X-ray transient GRS 1915+105 was discovered on 1992 August 15 by t
he WATCH all-sky X-ray monitor on GRANA T. The source is located in th
e Galactic plane. The initial X-ray light curve is presented, as well
as the results of a search for the optical counterpart of the source,
which apparently is fainter than 21 mag. Assuming that the source is a
low-mass X-ray binary, a lower limit of 1.5 kpc is derived for the di
stance to the source. The possibility of the source lying inside one o
f the two molecular cloud complexes along the line of sight is discuss
ed.
