We describe a case of septicemia due to Streptococcus canis in a 77-ye
ar-old man. The organism was presumably transmitted from a domestic an
imal. Ulcers of the lower limbs were the likely portals of entry. The
differentiation between Streptococcus canis and Streptococcus dysgalac
tiae was based on biochemical properties and DNA macrorestriction anal
ysis by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis.
