Abstract
In response to commentaries on an earlier review (Gaffan, 1992), it is acknowledged that there is more recent evidence for primacy in animal s' list memory, which is not susceptible to the methodological critici sms discussed in the review. However, methods advocated by the comment ators are liable to produce spurious assessments of primacy, and the o riginal objections still stand.
