Abstract
Cubic packing has allowed (triphenylarsine)diiodine (C6H5)3AsI2, to ad opt strict C3 point symmetry with the three phenyl rings arranged in t he form of a propeller around the linear As-I-I chain [I-As-C-C 54 (2) degrees]. Donation of the arsenic lone pair to iodine [As-I 2.616 (3) angstrom] considerably weakens the 1-1 bond [I-I 3.014 (3) angstrom].
