A 32-year-old male developed severe autoimmune thrombocytopenia refrac
tory to conventional immunosuppression. He had been treated with radio
therapy for stage I-A Hodgkin's disease (HD) 2 years earlier after a s
taging laparotomy and splenectomy. A 3-cm accessory spleen was detecte
d using computed tomography scan and Tc-99m scintigraphy. Resection re
sulted in normalization of the platelet counts. Two years later the pa
tient remains in remission of both diseases. Immune thrombocytopenia i
s rarely associated with HD and its remission following resection of a
n accessory spleen is an unusual finding.
