In this report the importance of heterocycles in amino acid and peptid
e chemistry is pointed out. Neuroexcitatory amino acids, kainic acid,
quisqualic acid , of which new syntheses are given, are representative
examples of the role of the heterocycle in the recognition of recepto
r sites. It is also shown that a heterocyclic structure can replace ad
vantageously a peptide turn. The synthesis of a functionnalized diazep
inone, a gamma-turn mimetic, is described
