High resolution translational energy spectrometry has been applied to
study excitation of N2 molecules in 1.8 keV collisions with H-2+, N2+,
CO+, CO+, O2+ and CS2+ projectiles. Excitation to optically-forbidden
N2 electronic states A 3SIGMA(u)+. B 3PI(g), B' 3SIGMA(u)- and a' 1SI
GMA(u)- is observed and compared with computed transition probabilitie
s. The cross section for excitation to these states is found to be sen
sitively dependent on whether the projectile ion is in a 2SIGMA+ state
or a 2PI state.
