The authors carried out a review of the literature on QA in health car
e (Ellis and Whittington, 1993), from which it emerged that techniques
can be considered under two headings: those that appeared to have bee
n developed specifically for the purpose, and those that rely on the a
pplication of established techniques from the social sciences. The am
of this article is to provide an overview of these techniques and appr
oaches and to highlight some of the methodological problems which bese
t tham.
