Al. Rosenfield et al., ORTHOPEDIC INJURIES FROM THE ANDOVER, KANSAS, TORNADO, The journal of trauma, injury, infection, and critical care, 36(5), 1994, pp. 676-679
Devastating tornados struck the state of Kansas on Friday, April 26, 1
991. Twenty lives were lost and many people were injured. Property dam
age was extensive. Overall, the outcome of those admitted to the vario
us hospitals was good, with few orthopedic-related complications. The
low complication rate can be attributed to thorough open wound managem
ent and suspicion and recognition of other potential orthopedic compli
cations such as compartment syndrome.
