The 802.5 Token Ring protocol is firmly established as an internationa
l standard. In this research note, its priority mechanism is analysed
in the context of real-time environments, and it is shown that althoug
h unable to implement a strict rate monotonic discipline, it is still
schedulable if certain (proven) necessary and sufficient conditions, e
xpressed in the form of inequalities, hold. These conditions also allo
w the treatment of problems related to coarse granularities and to mix
ed traffic.
