ALLIANCES OF MUHLENBERGIA (POACEAE) WITHIN NEW-WORLD ERAGROSTIDEAE ARE IDENTIFIED BY PHYLOGENETIC ANALYSIS OF MAPPED RESTRICTION SITES FROMPLASTID DNAS
Mr. Duvall et al., ALLIANCES OF MUHLENBERGIA (POACEAE) WITHIN NEW-WORLD ERAGROSTIDEAE ARE IDENTIFIED BY PHYLOGENETIC ANALYSIS OF MAPPED RESTRICTION SITES FROMPLASTID DNAS, American journal of botany, 81(5), 1994, pp. 622-629
Restriction sites for six enzymes were mapped for the plastid DNAs of
25 species of Eragrostideae, one species of Cynodonteae (Eustachys dis
tichophylla), and one species of Pooideae. Of the 124 restriction site
s observed, 67 were variably present and shared by two or more species
. These data were analyzed by the parsimony method using equal and une
qual weights and by bootstrap analysis. The cladistic analyses establi
shed that members of the Muhlenbergiinae, including the genera Muhlenb
ergia, Blepharoneuron, Bealia. Chaboissaea, Lycurus, and Pereilema, sh
are seven restriction site mutations and are strongly supported by the
data as a monophyletic subtribe. Surprisingly, Redfieldia flexuosa al
so clustered with the Muhlenbergiinae in the analysis, perhaps indicat
ive of a past interspecific hybridization event. The restriction sites
data also weakly support a relationship (six shared mutations) betwee
n Erioneuron, Munroa, and Dasylochloa.
