P. Allia et al., AN EXACT MODEL OF DC JOULE HEATING IN AMORPHOUS METALLIC RIBBONS, Materials science & engineering. A, Structural materials: properties, microstructure and processing, 179, 1994, pp. 361-365
A d.c. Joule heating technique allows new application-oriented crystal
lization products to be obtained from amorphous metallic ribbons under
controlled conditions. The structural changes occurring in a material
are continuously monitored through on-line measurements of the electr
ical resistance. Sample crystallization is often marked by a typical r
esistance bump. A general solution of the equation describing the evol
ution of the sample temperature and resistance in the course of d.c. J
oule heating is found. The crystallization of Fe40Ni40B20, characteriz
ed by a strong emission of heat, is treated in detail. Specific parame
ters of the process are properly determined from a comparison with exp
erimental results. The role of the transfer rate of the crystallizatio
n heat to the sample is briefly discussed.
