Band-gap-modulated diamond-like carbon (DLC) thin films are shown to e
xhibit quantum confinement effects by the blue shift of the optical ga
p with decreasing quantum well width. The blue shift observed experime
ntally in the band-gap-modulated DLC thin films is shown to follow the
variation predicted by a one-dimension quantum well model. Experiment
al C-V and I-V measurements also confirm the existence of electronic s
ubbands in the well material.
