Abstract
Environmental planning and monitoring for Europe's largest oil termina l at Sullom Voe are reviewed. It is concluded that adverse physical im pacts of the terminal have been minimal, and that the Shetland experie nce has become a model for sound environmental management and prudent co-operation between the oil industry, local government, and environme ntal interests.
