Abstract
The intrinsic fluorescence of fluoroquinolones was exploited first to discriminate between fluorophore populations after encapsulation in li posomes, and second to observe by epifluorescence their distribution i n phospholipid monolayers. The affinity of fluoroquinolones for a hydr ophobic environment and especially for phospholipids could help in int erpreting the mechanism of drug uptake in bacteria. Additionally, this will lead to improved encapsulation efficiencies of these drugs in li posomes.
