Abstract
The taxonomy and morphological concept of the stratigraphically import ant species Verrucosisporites nitidus are redefined. The Russian Frasn ian miospore species Lophotriletes grumosus is no longer considered sy nonymous with V. nitidus. The morphology of several similar Late Devon ian and Early Carboniferous miospore species are described and compare d. It has been established that V. nitidus, V. congestus and V. depres sus can only be differentiated on the basis of maximum size of verruca e. The stratigraphical distribution of these species and their zonal v alue is described and evaluated.
