The electrochemical behaviour of the Schiff base of pyridoxal phosphat
e with hexylamine have been studied by linear cyclic voltametry in non
aqueous solvents. An irreversible cathodic peak was observed for the
reduction of the monoprotonated species of the Schiff base. The peak p
otential (vs Ferroceno/Ferrocinium couple) varies more than 500 mV in
the solvents used in our study. This behaviour suggests that the elect
rochemical parameters extracted from the reduction of these compounds
as a function of the solvent parameters (polarity, polarizability, aci
d-base) could be useful in the characterization of the Schiff base as
a probe of the catalytic site of proteins.
