We present modelling results to interpret Li-like satellite spectra re
corded from solid Al targets irradiated with ultra-short (80 fs), high
intensity 10(16)-10(17) W cm-2 laser pulses. A fully time-dependent,
non-local thermodynamic equilibrium (NLTE) atomic kinetics model must
be used to account for the observed satellite peak-intensity distribut
ion; a stationary NLTE model is not sufficient. Hot electron effects o
n the doubly excited states population kinetics are also considered. D
etailed Stark broadened line profiles are employed to compute the synt
hetic spectra. Modelling results indicate that the satellite emission
is emitted in a 100 fs pulse.
