Abstract
Poly[omega-(1,8-naphthalimido)alkyl methacrylates] (the alkyl: ethyl, propyl, butyl, and pentyl) were synthesized. Inherent viscosities of t hese polymers were rather low. Poly-[omega-(1,8-naphthalimido)alkyl me thacrylates] showed weak monomer emission around 380 nm and strong exc imer emission around 460 nm in 1,2-dichloroethane. The intensity ratio of the excimer to monomer emissions was independent of the concentrat ion but dependent on the viscosity of the polymers. This result sugges ts that the polymers form excimers intramolecularly. The ratio showed an even-odd effect for the carbon number of the alkyl groups in the po lymers and it increased with the increase in the even or odd carbon nu mber.
