A model-aided Cowper process control has been implemented and commissi
oned during the installation of a new blast-furnace control system for
blast furnaces II and III of the Klockner Stahl GmbH in Bremen. The s
tructure of the process control is presented and first operating resul
ts are discussed. A program system developed by the BFI has been used
for an energy optimal Cowper control. The real-time control algorithm
uses a comprehensive mathematical simulation program for the accurate
thermic simulation of the Cowpers in order to minimize the natural gas
consumption. The natural gas saving due to the application of the Cow
per control system amounted until now to between 5 and 15%. A reductio
n by 5% of the natural gas consumption means a saving of about 800 000
DM/a in terms of natural gas costs. The operation of the Cowper contr
ol system proved to be therefore highly cost-effective.
