Abstract
Nothofagus leaves with plicate vernation, indicating a deciduous habit , are recorded from the Late Miocene of New Zealand. This is the first unequivocal record in New Zealand of deciduous Nothofagus, deciduous species now being restricted to Tasmania and South America.
