Abstract
The development of the free surface at the front of an incompressible viscous fluid pushed into a circular pipe is analyzed numerically in t he case without surface tension or gravity. Method of computation is a n extension of the MAC (marker and cell) method. The numerical result shows that the flow has a tendency to converge to a steady state with a nearly spherical surface shape, and that the pressure on the axis ju st inside the surface is lower than the atmospheric pressure.
