Several new complexes of oxovandium(V) and manganese(II) with the mono
basic bidentate ligands 2-acetylnaphthalene semicarbazone, 2-acetylthi
ophene semicarbazone, 2-acetylfuran semicarbazone and 2-acetylpyridine
semicarbazone have been prepared and characterized by elemental analy
sis, magnetic moments, IR, H-1 NMR and electronic spectral studies. Th
e complexes were monomeric and non-electrolytes. A probable tetracoord
inated tetrahedral geometry for manganese complexes and a pentacoordin
ated distorted trigonal bipyramidal and hexacoordinated octahedral geo
metries for 1:1 and 1:2 (M:L) oxovanadium complexes, respectively, hav
e been proposed. Some representative complexes of manganese and oxovan
adium are found to have remarkable antifungal and antibacterial activi
ties.
