The interaction of phosphoric acid with gamma- and delta-Al2O3 at 20 -
500-degrees-C is studied by high-resolution solid-state Al-27 and P-3
1 NMR. Surface and bulk phosphates including acidic aluminum phosphate
s are formed; in the presence of aluminas, decomposition of acidic pho
sphates proceeds at lower temperatures. The catalytic activity of phos
phated samples in isobutanol dehydration is nearly the same as that of
aluminum phoshate with P/Al less-than-or-equal-to 1 prepared by preci
pitation, though the former catalysts show no activity in 1-butene iso
merization.
