Transport vesicles need coat proteins in order to form. The coat prote
ins are recruited from the cytosol onto a particular membrane, where t
hey drive vesicle budding and select the vesicle cargo. So far three t
ypes of coated transport vesicles have been purified anti characterize
d and candidates for components of other types of coats have been iden
tified. This review gives a brief overview of what is known about the
various coats and their role in transport vesicle formation.
