This paper discusses computational models of the mechanism of emotion
elicitation according to appraisal theories of emotion. Following a br
ief review of earlier models, the general affordances of computational
models are discussed. Scherer's (1993) recent ''expert system'' for p
redicting emotions is then examined in some detail, followed by an exp
loration of several alternative algorithms for computing an elicited e
motion based on an appraisal specification.
