Crystalloluminescence upon crystallization of 2K2SO4 . Na2SO4 was stud
ied. The occurrence of discrete avalanche processes during crystal for
mation was established. Some crystalloluminescence flashes were charac
terized by a prompt (50 - 100 mus) rise of the emission front and expo
nential decay at a time tau of 7.0 +/- 0.5 ms. The total number of pho
tons in a flash was estimated to be as high as 10(8). The addition of
S2O82-did not affect the pulse shape, but increased the flash intensit
y. Preliminary ozonization of the dry salt varied the decay time: two
groups of flashes with tau of 1.5 +/- 0.5 and 0.3 +/- 0.1 ms were dist
inguished. The observed crystalloluminescence is associated with chemi
luminescent degradation of peroxide compounds, which is induced by the
crystallization process.
