Abstract
We have discovered a mitochondrial, site-specific DNase in Saccharomyc es cerevisiae with properties like that of a Type II restriction endon uclease. The enzyme, termed Scelll, cleaves the palindromic sequence, 5'GCCGGC, to give 3' ends recessed by 4 bases. Scelll is the first res triction-like endonuclease to be described in yeast mitochondria.
