Abstract
The existence or not of oscillatory interlayer exchange coupling of fe rromagnetic layers via (111) oriented copper spacer layers is controve rsial. We present evidence from magnetic and giant magnetoresistance s tudies of well-defined antiferromagnetic interlayer coupling in single crystalline (111) permalloy/Au multilayers. Four oscillations in the coupling are observed as the Au spacer layer thickness is increased. T he oscillation period is congruent-to 10 angstrom which is significant ly shorter than the period of congruent-to 11.5 angstrom predicted in Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida based models.
