W. Donaldson et al., THE CURRENT STATUS AND FUTURE-PROSPECTS OF THE TEXAS HORNED LIZARD (PHRYNOSOMA-CORNUTUM) IN TEXAS, The Texas journal of science, 46(2), 1994, pp. 97-113
A survey to assess the status of the Texas horned lizard (Phrynosoma c
ornutum) in Texas was conducted in 1992. Museum specimen records were
compiled to assess historical distribution and abundance, and 100 site
s across the state with adequate historical records were selected to b
e surveyed for current presence and abundance of the species. Intervie
ws were conducted with local residents concerning potential correlativ
e factors to horned lizard occurrence, and an extensive database compi
led from two sighting surveys distributed statewide was also used for
the same purpose. Horned lizards, or evidence of their occurrence, wer
e detected at 48 of the survey sites. These results are discussed in r
elation to current and historic land-use, pesticide use, and the invas
ion of the Red Imported Fire Ant (Solenopsis invicta). The future of t
he Texas horned lizard as a component of the natural heritage of the s
tate is discussed. Phrynosoma cornutum serves as an excellent indicato
r of the general environmental health of terrestrial ecosystems in Tex
as.
