Potential-pH relationships and selectivity coefficients K(ij)sel for g
lass electrodes (GEs) of xLi2O-xAl2O3-0.25xB2O3-(100-2.25x)SiO2 glasse
s, where x=20, 16, 12 and 10 mol%, have been investigated. The origina
l Na+ to Li+ and Na+ to H+ selectivity of the GEs increases with a dec
rease of x. This is accounted for by the increase of the degree of scr
eening of the AlO4/2- sites with SiO4/2 tetrahedra 'shell', where Nais more mobile than Li+ or H+. Treatment of the GEs with acid solution
(pH = 0) causes the hydrolysis and selective dissolution of SiO2. The
degree of screening and Na+ selectivity decrease.
