The National Council of State Supervisors of Foreign Languages (NCSSFL
) has discussed at its recent meetings the role of foreign language in
struction in a middle school curriculum. The members of NCSSFL, foreig
n language consultants with state departments of education, developed
the following position statement which was approved at NCSSFL's annual
meeting, November 1993, to assist districts as they develop middle sc
