Wave breaking of electron plasma waves in an unmagnetized, cold, colli
sionless plasma with a parabolic density profile is considered when th
e plasma resonance is situated near the top of the profile. For this c
ase, wave breaking takes place at a density lower than the resonant on
e and limits the growth of the plasma wave. The dynamics of wave break
ing in such conditions are studied as a function of position of resona
nce in the profile and of amplitude of the driver field.
