Abstract
In the review presented the structure of adhesion sites between the ou ter and inner membranes of Escherichia coli cells participating in tra nslocation of phage T4 DNA is discussed. Much attention is paid to eva luation of the development of the structural changes in the bacterial membranes in the course of infection. The results presented allow the intermembrane bridges induced by phage T4 to be consider as special ad hesion sites resulting from fusion of the bacterial membranes. A funda mental difference between the adhesion sites, which pre-exist in E. co li cells and those produced by phage T4 is suggested.
