A possibility to monitor the lateral organization of membranes compose
d of DMPC - DMPE and DMPC - DPPE mixtures with the fluorescent lipid p
robes bearing anthrylvinyl group in the hydrophobic region was studied
. It has been found that the probes detect adequately the presence of
lateral segregation in the DMPC - DMPE system but prefer the liquid ph
ase in the DMPC - DPPE one. The ability of the phospholipid probes to
record all stages of phase transition, and the pretransition of DMPC a
s well has been shown. We can conclude that in the biological temperat
ure range, anthrylvinyl-labeled lipids follow in a reliable mode the b
ehavior of their natural analogs and permit to perform their different
ial probing in heterogeneous membrane systems.
