Abstract
The method of homogencous deformations, in which macroscopic elastic p roperties are expressed directly in atomic terms, is developed in two parallel ways, one specially adapted to atomic and one to molecular cr ystals. The two are related by an unusual linear transformation. In pa rticular, the treatment enables the consequences of rotational invaria nce, which are straightforward for atomic crystals, to be deduced for the case of molecular crystals.
