The superspecies Aphaenogaster (supersp.) gemella Rog. (n. taxon) incl
udes two species : A. rifensis n. sp. a monotypic species which is des
cribed from the Rif range and A. gemella (Roger), a polytypic species
including two subspecies : A. gemella marocana Forel (western coast of
the Tangerian Peninsula) and A. gemella gemella (Roger) (Mediterranea
n coast) ; the Balearic populations (''typical form'') at the present
time going to extinction, are related to this latter one and would ori
ginate in a relatively recent introduction.
