We have isolated a Pinus sylvestris cDNA encoding a globular protein o
f 474 amino acids with a predicted molecular weight of 52 995 Da. The
deduced amino acid sequence showed 41.9% identity and 13.6% similarity
to mammalian cytosolic 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl-CoA-synthase (HMGS)
. Treatment of Scots pine seedlings with ozone resulted in a transient
increase of a 1.95 kb transcript, whereas a 1.2 kb mRNA decreased tra
nsiently, indicating a possible influence of ozone on isoprenoid biosy
nthesis.
