The theory of the Fourier series method for calculating stresses and s
trains in a rectangular prism of homogeneous, isotropic material is pr
esented. Boundary conditions consists of normal stresses at the surfac
es, with the shear stress at all surfaces assumed to be zero. The theo
ry is applied to the case of a single isolated strained layer. The str
ess relaxation, strain relaxation, and displacements are calculated in
the region where the strained layer meets the free surface. It is con
firmed that the component of the stress relaxation normal to the surfa
ce decays as 1/r within the strained layer, where r is the distance fr
om the free surface.
