This study evaluated the microscopic changes in leiomyomata following
the use of a gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH) agonist. Seventeen
women with symptomatic leiomyomata were included. Nine were treated wi
th a GnRH agonist for three to six months prior to surgery, and the re
maining eight served as controls. Following myomectomy, paraffin secti
ons were prepared from the tumors. These sections were examined micros
copically by two gynecologic pathologists, who were blind to the patie
nt groups. The results showed increased cellularity and hyalinization
in leiomyomata following GnRH agonist treatment.
