A theory which explains self-consistently the emission and the polariz
ation rotation of transmitted light has been developed for F(A) centre
s in crystals with cubic symmetry. Azimuthal dependences of F(A) lumin
escence in alkali halides are very informative for determining the ele
ctron-phonon interaction as well as the parameters related to the stru
ctural and optical quality for colour centre lasers crystals. The theo
retical results are applied to the interpretation of the luminescence
properties of F(A) (Li) centres in KCl, RbCl and KF.
