We report experimental measurements of the Kerr coefficient in a model
three-component microemulsion. Our measurements show that domains of
the dispersed phase are strongly correlated, even for moderate to low
concentrations of the dispersed phase. Such a correlation invalidates
the use of the Clausius-Mossotti equation, which has been a common pra
ctice in the interpretation of light-scattering and birefringence data
