In this paper we investigate the modifications of the photoemission sp
ectral function induced by charge density wave transitions in selected
quasi one- and two-dimensional metals. By exploiting a high energy re
solution and an accurate temperature control we can identify clear fin
gerprints of the transitions. The present results raise however some f
undamental questions concerning the description of the spectral proper
ties of the normal metallic state in one dimension.
